Why “2 Degrees” Make a Difference – December Newsletter

2 degree LOOK Cleat Wedge

Things evolve—or do they? When I first developed cleat wedges in the 1990s, I introduced 1-degree and 0.5-degree wedges. While the 0.5-degree option never made it to production, the 1-degree wedges quickly became a standard in bike fitting. Early surveys revealed an intriguing trend: the average cyclist used 2.2 wedges per foot. It might sound peculiar, but many cyclists require at least three wedges per foot for optimal alignment.

As bike fitting continued to advance, it became clear there was room for innovation. Enter the 2-degree wedge. Initially met with curiosity, these quickly gained traction. Within just a few years, sales of 2-degree wedges accounted for 25% of all wedge sales. Today, they dominate, making up over 50% of usage among fitters.

This shift also prompted a necessary change in nomenclature. Previously, “one wedge” or “two wedges” referred to the number of wedges per foot. With the introduction of 2-degree wedges, speaking in terms of degrees rather than units is more precise, ensuring clarity for fitters and cyclists alike.

To celebrate this milestone, we’re offering a free pack of wedges with every $100 order placed in December and January of 2025. Email us at info@BicycleFit.com to take advantage of this limited time offer!

Equipment Speaks—Are You Listening?

I’ve always said that “wear on equipment tells a story.” And when it comes to pedals—or rather cleats—that story can be surprisingly revealing.

Take a LOOK (no pun intended) at the Speedplay cleat, for example. Have you noticed wear on the base plate’s outer (lateral) side? That subtle detail tells you something about your cleat-to-pedal alignment. Even the slightest signs of wear can uncover insights about your setup. Is your alignment just a touch-off? Are you unknowingly putting uneven strain on one side? It’s all written in the patterns of your equipment.

Here’s the fun part: Look closely at your pedals, cleats, or any gear that shows wear. Snap a photo and send it to us! Suppose we feature it in an upcoming newsletter. In that case, you’ll receive a free pack of wedges to help fine-tune your ride for maximum performance and comfort.

Because sometimes, the most minor details make the most significant difference.
